Norethisterone Enanthate is a form of hormonal birth control which is used to prevent pregnancy in women. It is used both as a form of progestogen-only injectable birth control and in combined injectable birth control formulations. Norethisterone Enanthate is also used to treat women who have stopped having menstrual periods for several months due to amenorrhea, but who are not pregnant or going through menopause. It is also used to treat a condition called endometriosis, in which tissue that normally lines the inside of the uterus is found outside the uterus in the abdomen/pelvic area, causing painful/irregular periods. Norethisterone Enanthate works by stopping the normal growth of the uterus lining during the menstrual cycle and signaling hormone changes in the uterus to restore normal menstrual periods. This drug can be used as monotherapy. Norethisterone Enanthate is administered through injection route by way of intramuscular injection.
Progestins like Norethisterone Enanthate exert their effects on target cells via binding to progesterone receptors that result in downstream changes to target genes. Target cells are found in the reproductive tract, breast, pituitary, hypothalamus, skeletal tissue, and central nervous system. Contraceptive efficacy is derived mainly from changes to the cervical mucus, wherein Norethisterone Enanthate increases the cell content and viscosity of the mucous to impede sperm transport and migration. Norethisterone Enanthate also induces a variety of changes to the endometrium that make it inhospitable for implantation. Working via a negative feedback loop, Norethisterone Enanthate also acts on both the hypothalamus and anterior pituitary to suppress the release of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) from the anterior pituitary. Suppression of these hormones prevents follicular development, ovulation, and corpus luteum development.
