Dapagliflozin is an anti-diabetic drug, falling under the class of blood glucose lowering drugs. It is used to lower blood sugar levels and reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and failure in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Dapagliflozin is also prescribed to reduce the risk of end-stage kidney disease leading to hospitalization or death from heart problems in adults who also have kidney problems caused by type 2 diabetes. The drug can be used as monotherapy or in combination with other glucose lowering medicines. Dapagliflozin is administered through oral route by way of coated and film-coated tablets, as well as intravenous administration.
Dapagliflozin is a sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitor used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. SGLT2 is the main transporter that mediates reabsorption of glucose in the kidneys, from the glomerular filtrate back into the circulation. By inhibiting SGLT2, Dapagliflozin blocks reabsorption of filtered glucose in the kidney, increasing urinary glucose excretion and reducing blood glucose levels.
